Author Fountain masterfully captures forlorn Billy and his plight here with a tender and vibrant immediacy, thrilling in its vigor and refreshing in its perspective. Billy's the classic innocent (technically a "virgin" as is the hapless young man in another exceptional novel I've read recently: Memory of Lost Skin, by Russell Banks. what's going on with this - other than apt and inspired character attributes from terrific authors). After he destroys the car of his just disfigured sister's schmuck of an ex-fiance, it's either the army or jail; but (as for so many of the pure of heart), an impulsive loyalty trumps a clean police record. It's the same kind of reactive pluck that gets him a silver medal in Iraq, along with a replay of his exploits on Fox News, and some days leave to share with the other heroes of his Bravo squad. It's not R&R for our fighting boys however: they're trotted around the country in a strategic government campaign ("victory tour") to stir up national spirit for the war(s). After "a night a day and a night" with family before the big climax (Thanksgiving Day with the Dallas Cowboys), they ship back to Iraq hours later. Among the various conceits Fountain flies in all this traipsing is that the tour is another kind of battle, just as exhausting perhaps - only without the lethal gunfire.Though Billy's untutored, he engages with his ever expanding curiosity, coupled with an undertow of natural bewilderment (understandably so!?!?!? - while a creature unto himself, he's definitely cousins with Holden and Huck). Fresh from both battle and the death of his mentor therein, he perceives with searing insight, raw and gentle at once. He notes that he'll be spending a lifetime trying to understand a single day of battle, and Billy is drawn in such singular empathy you truly sense the weight of his future burden. Fountain succeeds (for the most part) in fusing Billy's own vision and voice with that of an articulate narrator to encapsulate a rueful wisdom emerging from too hard won experience (silver medal notwithstanding).Fountain also vividly relays the chorus of Billy's cohorts - their jostling, their bravado, their humor that comes from their still in formation manhood - with a jovial alacrity which leaves you wondering just what's going to pop next. They're classic cut-ups. This is in nice contrast to the varying aggressions vying in counterpoint to the war itself: professional football, mass marketing, and capitalism. In one telling scene, Billy and a comrade ogle premiere Cowboy merchandise they can't afford - the irony being they're fighting overseas for what they'll never have here. As the story sustains its trek, the Bravo squad is treated more and more like commodities until they're left abandoned post a half-time show which has bombarded with ever increasing incredulousness. (what Busby Berkley did with show girls, Fountain does with marching bands and Destiny's Child). Finally, the title's just right: it sets up expectations, then plays with them to twist you into a much deeper place as the novel moves to its finish. Billy's notions of home, country, honor, and prestige have all shifted and as the story ends, they're remaining in movement. The road ahead as he drives back to the base is haunting (for you more than him maybe?) and after that... All I'll say is (if's he's "lucky") it ll be a long way back to nevermore for Billy. He's a wonderful character, and Ben Fountain's craft and capacious heart are wondrous to experience.

This satirical book is primarily about how war is packaged for consumption by the American public. It is also about the young men who fight in war and the psychological shields of dark humor they develop to protect them from the absurdity. The book does a commendable job of contrasting the lives of lower middle class young soldiers with older upper class millionaires who may be genuinely patriotic but who profit from bloated defense department budgets. When young poor men go to war, a range of defense mechanisms develop and Fountain explores many of these psychological survival strategies in the compelling characters in this novel. The dialogue between the young men is full of testosterone while the dialogue of those with greater economic power is masked with platitudes. The message is clear, we should feel good about our football team and about our war. The young soldiers are not fools and dark humor, male one-up-manship, and a relentless sexual drive help drive the narrative. The war in Iraq, with all its contradictions and ambiguities, is always present even if the entire novel takes place within a couple of hours at the Dallas Cowboys football stadium. The scene where the solders interact with the football players is insightful as we see male physical specimens who make millions of dollars playing football compared to the smaller, taut, bodies of the soldiers who make a bit more than minimum wage. The novel captures the mentality of the Bush era where the public struggled with the dissonance of support for the war and real questions about the legitimacy of our actions in Iraq. It is to Fountain’s credit that he places this dissonance in the minds of the young men who actually fought in the war. The reality of war and the illusion of war are ever present, especially in the mind of young Billy Lynn.

For me personally, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, was not the book that I thought it would be, I thought that this book would be action packed and exhilarating. However the first quarter of the book, has nothing to do with the main plot, and even after the plot has been revealed, there are too many conflicts that distracts me from the main plot. The book was very hard to follow with Fountain’s confusing dialogue, not to mention that the book has an excessive amount of flashbacks that only served to confuse me. The author’s dialogue also contains serious vulgar language which was expected. The novel was oversaturated with societal, world, and inner conflicts. Throughout the novel, the theme of questioning society is apparent, such as the struggles of gender roles, the purpose of war, and family values. The novel lacked character development and detail, and there were simply too many characters in Bravo Squad, and throughout the entire book, I would get mixed up with one or the other, and ultimately, the character development was so poor, that, I as a reader, did not care one bit about any of them. However, Fountain does a great job at utilizing the perspective of the soldiers to question the purpose of war and societal norms. So it was interesting seeing war and civilian lifestyle through the eyes of a war hero. This book is a great read for those who are interested in war and what it means to be an American. However the book did not have enough excitement, which made it very hard to pick up and read everyday.
