This review is for the kindle version.The book is fine but there's no way to obtain the audio tracks. I emailed the company and they said it's not included with the kindle version.I feel like it's not a complete system without the audio feedback to let me know I'm doing it right.Seeing as how the kindle version costs almost as much as the spiral-bound copy that includes audio I think it's a little silly.
I've been working through the book for almost a week and it is great. I shopped around a lot for beginner guitar courses before settling on Alfred's. You start off basic, three notes. No crazy finger contortions to create a bunch of chords. You start with individual notes, one string at a time, until you can play the whole scale. Then you add chords into your musical palette. Etc. It seems like a nice progression. I purchased this with Alfred's Basic Guitar Theory, Bk 1 & 2: The Most Popular Method for Learning How to Play (Alfred's Basic Guitar Library)
At a private teacher I do like this book.... but obtaining sound files is proving to be next to impossible. Of course you can shell out 13.46 for the cd but that seems a little unfair. Anyway, I did find it in iTunes store and purchased it and ... viola....the sound files are included and actually will play..... but they are too fast for beginners. My plan was to find these files on my laptop (I know they are not coming from the cloud as they work even when I turn off my wifi) and use the Anytune app to slow them down.... but I can't find them on my hard drive! They are there somewhere ... but I can't locate them. Anyway, if you are reading this and have found these files please let me know in a review. I would say in the questions section but for some reason I can't find the "ask question " link.... ugh.
I would simply advise people 1) Be careful with your clicks 2) Make a copy of your order at checkout. I was going to purchase Alfred's Book 1 because I'm a complete newbie to guitar. The "bundled offer" included a Book 2 and a Book 1 & 2. Wow, two volumes in one, a no-brainer right? So that's what I thought I 'clicked' to put in my cart. Yesterday I received Book 2 which is basically a book of sheet music with minimal instructions. A perfectly good book for people who knows how to read music, but not much use to someone lacking basic skills. The book arrived in perfect condition and of acceptable quality for the low cost.
I'm honestly not too impressed with this book. I have used it to teach a few students how to play guitar. I think it takes too long to get to all 6 strings. I do appreciate that it has an emphasis on reading notes (which a lot of guitarists don't do), but I feel it dwells too long on each string. I.e., you only learn 3 notes per string. You might be on one string for 3 pages, two strings for 3-4 pages, 3 strings for 3-4 pages, etc. Once you are at the 4 and 5 string marks, there are a lot of songs being played that would just be easier to learn if you already knew full chord formations (which I went ahead and taught my students). It is so much easier for them to play songs when their hands are in the basic chord formation. They are more likely to use the proper fingers and they aren't struggling with find which string to play. I guess it's not a terrible book, but it's nothing special. I don't think I would use it again.
It is still a good tutorial for learning to read music on a guitar. However, I REALLY miss the chord chart that they used to have inside the back cover. It is now best for only note by note playing.I used this many, many years ago when I was learning guitar, so this has probably been through several new editions since then. But, one of the most useful references was the the index with finger charts for nearly any chord. If I had known that it no longer contained this, I probably wouldn't have purchased it. Will have to use on-line chord references instead.
The best self teaching instruction book for the beginning guitar player on the market. I've tried the others and they all seem to want to start with chords. Personally I wanted to play the guitar for my own enjoyment and not as an accompanying instrument while somebody sang or as in a band. I wanted to play the melodies and feel I'm making progress. That's the emphasis in this book. You start playing melodies and learning to read music from the beginning. There are no tabs, if that's what you're looking for.
I learned using this method 42 years ago. I'm getting ready to give this to my grandson so he can learn how to play. This is a good well-rounded course that if you stick to it it will have you up to an intermediate level in in a reasonable amount of time. Course material is well-thought-out and the easy to understand. Add guitar and elbow grease
