District leaders talk about change all of the time. They create big, bold strategic plans developed with months of input of from entire communities and host celebrations to kickoff the journey they are to embark. Alas, many are not successful because they fail to address underlying structural impairments that will prevent the best plans from being implemented. The New School Rules gives practical advice for how districts put into action immediately tactics and strategies to bring about real, sustainable change. Whether you are a superintendent, teacher, administrator or school board member, this is a great resource to help bring the change to our schools that everyone wants.
Highly recommend the book -- not only for school and district leaders -- but for anyone who has ever been on a team, or in a meeting. The book clearly explain why change is necessary and provides examples of how simple changes can have a significant impact. My favorite chapter is Teaming: Build Trust and Allow Authority to Spread. In it, authors Anthony Kim and Alexis Gonzales-Black remind us that when everyone is accountable, no is. I particularly love how they emphasize practice here, and throughout the book -- that effective teams spend time frequently building these habits (e.g. using protocols to run meetings, raise concerns, and do the work). Over time this enables everyone to be more effective and feel more engaged; my own team now practices these regularly, and I have seen the difference. It's a great companion if you've read Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World in that The NEW School Rules: 6 Vital Practices for Thriving and Responsive Schools provides practical advice on how to take concepts like planning for change, building trust, failing forward -- concepts that we've all heard about -- and provides clear steps on how to implement those ideas right away.
The New School Rules is an indispensable resource for educational leaders seeking to transform their district or school. For too long, schools have struggled to be nimble and innovative enough to address challenges in a timely and effective manner. The authors provide six rules (strategies really) to rethink how we lead schools to best meet a myriad of student and adult needs. The book is concise yet thorough and the addition of workouts and experiments allow any leader to jump right in and start transforming their campus right away.

This book provides steps and insights on how to foster a collaborative culture with school and district leaders.
I bought this book wanting a better understanding of the current school system and more importantly how to improve it. It turns out, this book taught me much more.As someone who doesn’t work in the school system (I work in tech), I did not think this book would help me at all in my career. Surpassingly, this book me the importance of having an exceptional structure in the workforce. The book went into detail of the 6 vital practices and had anecdotes, how-tos, and case-studies of each one.Overall an informative and smooth read.
