betting on horses for dummies is one of the best books i have gotten.. i am new to horse betting so i want to learn everything i can about it.. and this book does just that..it explains in detail the different bets you can make, how to read the odds, different horse tracks, what you should look for in the races leading up to the triple crown, race lingo, a tear out cheat sheet to take to races with you and many other things that you will want to know..this book will help you when you looking up things online and on youtube.i am so glad i decided to get this book. it really has helped me learn a few things i want to know before i get my bets ready for the triple crown and many other races..i had no idea how exciting horse betting was until i got a job in a casino that has a horse track.. i started just betting the kentucky derby 3 years ago.. of couse i had help from a friend who bets the races all the time.. now 3 years later i really wan to get into it.. AP winning the triple crown last year really did it for me..now am looking at other casinos near me that has a horse track, i started reading up on the horses the owners the trainers the jockeys and even the bloodlines of the horses.. so this book really is going to help with everything. it really is a must have for people new to horse racing..
If I was to rate this against other handicapping books then I would lower the rating, but I review it against what it is intended to do for the reader. It's a great primer into the world of the Sport of Kings, and will give the weekend warrior some great ideas just to have fun at the track. If you want to delve deeper into the sport then it provides a very substantial base to build off of. Since there is no Holy Grail of handicapping from this book you'll just have to strike out on your own.
I am a fan of the "Dummies" books, but this was a disappointment. First of all, the graphs, tables and other illustrations are really not readable, even with reading glasses. Second, they really gloss over a lot of basics. I am a rank beginner and could have used a lot more detail. I would recommend Kris Vemula's book, "Horse Race Betting for Beginners and Beyond". It is a fantastic book and goes much deeper into details and strategies.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book! We went to Churchill Downs in Louisville Ky and were in the “Millionaires Row†for an evening of racing, so I figured I should have some knowledge of how to bet and how to read and interpret the racing forms etc. I ordered the book a week before we attended the event. I had never been to the races and have always wanted to do so, and I wanted to be able to enjoy the whole experience and be comfortable with the surroundings etc. and not be intimidated with the process. This book was fantastic! I didn’t need to be an expert but wanted to be comfortable at the track and that is what happened. By the end of the evening I was helping my friends and people I just met with their bets. It was so much fun. I told everyone that I learned from the book “Betting on Horse Racing for Dummiesâ€.
This book is just the winning ticket for those who are just getting started in horse racing. Everything you need to know about betting and handicapping can be found here.You will not need another book on this subject.Chapters are easy to read and short.You can even download a cheat sheet to take to the track or track betting site.
I was one of those people that would smirk and roll my eyes every time I would see one of these 'for dummies' books. No longer. I didn't realize each book is written by a professional dedicated to that books' particular topic. Anyway, this book was perfect. Great for the beginner, which i am not, and great for seeing a new way to look at your style of handicapping, to see if there are any angles you are overlooking, or need some improvement in. I really recommend this book, and i can t believe I am saying that, but i do, because it is true.
I always love these "For Dummies" books because they are written so that you really can understand the subject matter. This one is no exception. It's not a book that I would sit and read cover to cover, although I did read the first two chapters like that, but I've found it to be especially useful in looking up terms, or specific questions. The "quick tips" in the margins are great. I use a highlighter when reading, so that it's especially easy to go back to a particular subject of interest. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about how to bet the horses.
Bought this book as a joke for my girl friend who has become interested in horse racing. Couple weeks later we went to the track & she bet in five races and won (W,P,S) five in a row. Maybe beginners luck, maybe the well laid out and informative book... who knows, maybe it's a gift, but she's one every time we've gone this summer
