Book has good pictures, but accompanying text MUST be read several times to understand or visualize quilter's folk art character portrayals, human & nonhuman. They are folksy Bible & spiritually based. Like many slave artists, much is unknown about Harriet Powers. Author did research stories of other slaves; older African-American quilters; their descendents; and oral stories which Harriet did and/or could have experienced. Shows strength & richness of one slave woman. Book would be enriched with larger size; simple text Glad through acts of providence quilts survive & are in Smithsonian Museum, Washington, D.C.
Good for history of quilts
A very interesting read and good info on African/Am quilt history.Since we were in the Boston area for Christmas, we attempted to go to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to see Harriet Powers quilt which this book says in on display there. Fortunately, we had the good sense to call ahead to be sure it's still there. We were told it was not currently displayed. Very disappointing, and odd that the museum would not correct the written text alluding to their display of the quilt.
Beautiful documentary of a significant art form in our history that might have easily been lost. I am a quilter and have shared this book with my friends as an example of one more way to preserve our American heritage. I'm so thankful the quilts were saved!
What a great book about an often forgotten area of quilting. I really loved reading it. It's the perfect follow up after reading The Invention of Wings.
What a great book! It introduces the reader to a remarkable woman who was able to tell "her story" with quilting. Reading this book helps one understand the past years of slavery and realize in humane treatment should never be tolerated for any group of people. We are looking forward to seeing Harriet Powers' quilt in Washington DC in a few weeks.
