About the Author
Award-winning writer, Gail Avery Halverson, is the author of The Boundary Stone, a historical romance set in 1665 England at the time of the Great Plague. The Boundary Stone is a Chaucer Award Finalist (historical fiction), a Cygnus Award Finalist (speculative fiction), and a Chatelaine Award Winner (historical romantic fiction). She is also the playwright and composer of musical plays that have been performed for nearly 300,000 children since 2004. Writing for both theater and television, she holds a B.A. in English Literature/Communications from the University of California, Davis; and is currently at work on a television pilot for Twin One Productions, Inc. She lives in Northern California with her husband and son. The Boundary Stone is her debut novel.

The Boundary Stone by Gail Avery Halverson is the perfect example of why I accept requests for reviews and read authors that are new to me and/or debut authors. More than once I have found, as is the case here, a great story and fell in love with another author that I might have never known about.Ms. Halverson has done a remarkable job with her debut novel. The plot was well thought out and the scenes were true to the period. The characters are beautifully drawn and her descriptive prose was spot on. I love it when the author describes a scene so well I feel like I am watching through my own eyes.Lady Catherine Abbott knew from a young age that she was to marry Viscount Miles Houghton the heir to Houghton Hall. Her father had agreed to and approved of the union. For Catherine this would mean a loveless marriage with her days spent shopping and going to parties in society. Such a tragedy for a young woman who is bright, has an inquisitive mind with goals and dreams of her own. Catherine has a keen eye for the natural world and a talent for capturing nature in her sketches. She would love nothing more than to publish her butterfly sketches before she marries and will no longer be able to pursue her dreams.Meanwhile, Simon McKensie is training to be a physician at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. He has radical ideas about patient care and hospital protocol which along with his research has caused the hospital administration some problems. As a solution, he is being sent to Wells for six months to be the personal physician to the Lord Mayor. Once there he cross paths with Lady Catherine and he is struck by her brilliant mind and her unpretentious beauty.Once the Great Plague of 1665 spreads beyond London to Wells, Lady Catherine and Simons’ paths cross again. The plague pushes both to their physical and mental limits and beyond. It also shows Lady Catherine how precious life is and further leads her to question what she wants from life. Is she strong enough to defy convention and follow her dreams? The story is too good; therefore, I will stop here and not spoil anything for other readers.In summary, Ms. Halverson most definitely knows how to engage the reader through character development, plot twists and wonderful back stories. Catherine Abbott has everything a young lady of quality could wish for in England, 1660's. She lives on her father’s comfortable estate in the village of Wells, Buckinghamshire and she’s soon to be wed to Miles Houghton, a childhood friend recently returned from several years in France. For Miles, the wedding is just the ticket to free him from his rather large gambling debt. His heart isn't in it, though, as he still yearns for the Parisian nightlife.However, Catherine has had an interest in science, books, and “the mysteries of this world†that inspires her to make complex drawings of butterflies and track the constellations in the night skies. Can she be happy as an idle wife? When she meets Simon, a young doctor who has been assigned to care for her aging, gout-ridden father, she begins to dream of a different future, impossible, she understands, but she still can dream, right?Then the Black Plague strikes England. In a short Afterword, the author relates the story of a little English village on which she patterned her fictional Wells, where quarantine did serve to save lives at the time of the Black Plague.Set against the backdrop of England's Black Plague, one woman bravely challenges the rules of stature and class to find her true love and true calling. Historical romance readers will enjoy curling up with Halverson's first book in The Stockbridge Series and look forward to reading the next one.
Full disclosure says I have to say that historical fiction/romance is not my genre, but I made an exception for this book and am so glad I did. This is so much more than just a "period piece". Ms. Halverson's writing is beautiful with a narrative that tells a great story but doesn't dawdle as so many tend to do. Her descriptions of characters and scenery pull the reader right into the story. But the thing that makes this a great read more than anything, is the character of Catherine is not the breathless, vapid heroine of so many books of this type. Catherine is beautiful, yes, but she is also thoughtful, determined, resourceful, and her own woman. A message of hope in a story told against the backdrop of a terrible time in the history of the world, this is a book I heartily recommend. Copies have already been purchased to take a place under several Christmas trees of family and friends this season.
If you've ever wondered what it might be like to be a young woman or man living in C17th century London or Amsterdam, your head and heart filled with dreams and aspirations, chaffing at the constraints of family expectations, societal rules and economic hardship, and faced with the life and death obstacles presented by the Black Plague, read this book! Halverson has taken some seriously humbling research and skillfully used it to bring this world utterly to life for you, carrying you along the heartrending journey of several diverse and unique characters as their paths converge at this watershed moment in history. Halverson explores the impact of a great upheaval on institutions, mores and rigid social orders, and how new heroes/ines and free spirits rise up to fill the gaps left by destruction. The writing is nuanced, atmospheric and emotionally compelling. A highly recommended read.
